Some Thoughts on D2…
We witnessed the inaugural week of D2, a division set up for teams that need some time to grow. With this new spin on our league, we saw some interesting things develop. As a league veteran I wanted to provide some thoughts as to what I saw!
Early MVP Candidate:
It isn’t often that someone other than a QB wins MVP and for obvious reasons. The QB is the most important position in perhaps all of sports and more often than not a team goes as it’s QB does. However, my dark horse D2 MVP candidate is not a QB. Introduce, Isaiah Woddard, WR/DB for the Titans. Isaiah made plays ALL DAY. He even took a full field hand off to the house. With 10 catches and 2 TD’s the Titans may have a playmaker on their hands with all the makings of an MVP candidate.
The Browns will be the Browns:
Historically, we would put the Browns in D1 without hesitation. However, after last year the roster has completely turned over outside of a few pillars in the org. With Sohel at the helm many wondered if the Browns would be able to replicate any sort of success albeit in a lower division. Well, they did just that. The went against a Suicide Squad team that might be the most talented D2 team we have on paper and came out with a win in a close one. The makings of a championship team often include the ability to close games out. Sohel, Rob Jones and crew did just that. We expect their veteran savvy to carry them far if not all the way.
The Most Successful Teams Will be The Ones Who Grow:
Finally, keep in mind that the season doesn’t end after week 1. With everyone making the playoffs the best team will end up being the one that makes the right adjustments and doesn’t panic when things look wrong. Our advice to all teams is to understand your position, support your teammates and learn to grow with each other in your system. Particularly if you are gelling with a new team. Take Talha of the Thunder, a rookie to SAFL who opened his season with a touchdown and a defensive interception, or Ryan of the Sleepers who put a valiant 5-TD effort up against the Titans.
Teams, identify what works, and make it better. The season is a LONG way from being over. Word on the street is most teams haven’t put their best foot forward yet…
